The Andromeda Galaxy also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224 is a barred spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth and the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. The galaxy’s name stems from the area of Earth’s sky in which it appears, the constellation of Andromeda, which itself is named after the Ethiopian (or Phoenician) princess who was the wife of Perseus in Greek mythology.
La galaxie d’Andromède, également connue sous le nom de Messier 31, M31 ou NGC 224, est une galaxie spirale barrée située à environ 2,5 millions d’années-lumière de la Terre et la plus proche de la Voie lactée. Le nom de la galaxie provient de la région du ciel terrestre dans laquelle elle apparaît, la constellation d’Andromède, qui elle-même est nommée d’après la princesse éthiopienne (ou phénicienne) qui était l’épouse de Persée dans la mythologie grecque.
