The Markarian chain is a group of galaxies belonging to the Virgo cluster. It owes its name to Benjamin Markarian, who discovered that they were animated by a common motion.
The chain is located at the center of the Virgo Cluster (an average distance of around 65 million light-years), which includes the Local Group, home to our own Milky Way galaxy.
La chaîne de Markarian est un ensemble de galaxies appartenant à l’amas de la Vierge. Elle doit son nom à Benjamin Markarian qui a découvert qu’elles étaient animées d’un mouvement commun.
Cette chaine est située au centre de l’amas de la Vierge ( une distance moyenne d’environ 65 millions d’années lumières) , dont fait partie le Groupe local, où se trouve la Voie Lactée, notre galaxie.
