IC 5146, also known as the Cocoon Nebula, is an astronomical nebula with an embedded open star cluster in the constellation of Swan. The star cluster is designated Collinder 470.
The nebula has an apparent extent of about 10 arcminutes and is about 3000 light-years from Earth; its physical extent is thus about 10 light-years.
The nebula is a star-forming region of ionized atomic hydrogen and has both emitting, reflecting, and absorbing components.
IC 5146 is located at the eastern end of the elongated Barnard 168 dark cloud, as seen from Earth, and is part of an extended molecular cloud along with it.
IC 5146, également connue sous le nom de nébuleuse du Cocon, est une nébuleuse avec un amas ouvert d’étoiles intégré dans la constellation du Cygne. L’amas d’étoiles porte le nom de Collinder 470.
La nébuleuse a une extension apparente d’environ 10 minutes d’arc et se trouve à environ 3000 années-lumière de la Terre ; son extension physique est donc d’environ 10 années-lumière.
La nébuleuse est une région de formation d’étoiles avec de l’hydrogène atomique ionisé et possède à la fois des composants émissifs, réfléchissants et absorbants.
Vu de la Terre, IC 5146 se trouve à l’extrémité est du nuage sombre allongé Barnard 168 et fait partie, avec ce dernier, d’un vaste nuage moléculaire
